The Great Smoky Mountains National Park : There are a multitude of reasons why the Smoky Mountains region of Tennessee has emerged as one of the top 10 vacation destinations in the nation. The outdoor attraction of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park explains part of the appeal of the area. The park is a national treasure that was the first "star of the show" in this part of the world. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park not only offers stunning vistas to Tennessee visitors, but it also plays host to an incredibly and almost unprecedented number of animal species. The black bears of the Smokies might be the most famous of the creatures that make their home here. But the park is teaming with life from literally thousands of species. This is true for the famous Smoky Mountain foliage as well. There are more species of trees found here than in any other ecosystem in the world! It is partly this diversity that explains the spectacular fall colors that light up the Tennessee hillside with autumnal flare every year. Hiking is popular in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park; as is the scenic drives available along the Newfound Gap Road.
